Instead of artificially selecting plants in a laboratory, <strong>DARkWIN<\/strong> proposes a different approach: letting <strong>pollinators<\/strong>\u2014in this case, bumblebees\u2014<strong>choose for us.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><br data-start=\"323\" data-end=\"326\" data-is-only-node=\"\" \/>By visiting the flowers they find most attractive, these insects naturally select the plants with the best traits: greater heat resistance, better water-use efficiency, or superior fruit quality.<\/p>\n<p>The scientific team studies this behavior <strong>to understand what pollinators prefer and how it relates to the plants&#8217; genetics.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-image-element \" style=\"--awb-margin-top:10px;--awb-margin-bottom:10px;--awb-caption-title-font-family:var(--h2_typography-font-family);--awb-caption-title-font-weight:var(--h2_typography-font-weight);--awb-caption-title-font-style:var(--h2_typography-font-style);--awb-caption-title-size:var(--h2_typography-font-size);--awb-caption-title-transform:var(--h2_typography-text-transform);--awb-caption-title-line-height:var(--h2_typography-line-height);--awb-caption-title-letter-spacing:var(--h2_typography-letter-spacing);\"><span class=\" fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-1 hover-type-none\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1531\" height=\"980\" title=\"Foto-Darkwin\" src=\"https:\/\/novagric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Foto-Darkwin.jpg\" alt class=\"img-responsive wp-image-21315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/novagric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Foto-Darkwin-200x128.jpg 200w, https:\/\/novagric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Foto-Darkwin-400x256.jpg 400w, https:\/\/novagric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Foto-Darkwin-600x384.jpg 600w, https:\/\/novagric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Foto-Darkwin-800x512.jpg 800w, https:\/\/novagric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Foto-Darkwin-1200x768.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/novagric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Foto-Darkwin.jpg 1531w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/span><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-4\" style=\"--awb-margin-top:20px;\"><h2>Project Objectives<\/h2>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-5\"><ul>\n<li>Develop a <strong>new geo-positioning<\/strong> device to automatically detect and quantify sequential spatio-temporal interactions between a large number of plants and pollinating insects.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Develop the world&#8217;s first automated platform<\/strong> based on ecological \u2018plant x insect\u2019 interactions to phenotype floral metabolic traits for resistance to change for a completely new pollinator-assisted selection and breeding.<\/li>\n<li>Development of <strong>pollinator-assisted plant breeding software<\/strong> as a basis for a new plant breeding technique (NPBT).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Analysis of pollinator-flower phenotyping<\/strong> in the prediction of agronomic resistance and crop quality.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Establishment of a unique and unprecedented multi-omics database<\/strong> on nutritional, hormonal, metabolomic and transcriptomic profiling and QTLs and candidate genes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Modelling pollinator foraging decisions<\/strong> in response to environment and plant x pollinator networks.<\/li>\n<li>Develop an unprecedented set of <strong>new tomato F1 hybrids based on pollinator-driven selection<\/strong> of parental lines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-6\" style=\"--awb-margin-top:20px;\"><h2>Technology at the service of natural selection<\/h2>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-7\"><p>In the <strong>DARkWIN project<\/strong>, technology doesn&#8217;t replace nature\u2014it observes and supports it.<\/p>\n<p>Miniaturized sensors <strong>(Living IoT)<\/strong> track the flight of pollinators to understand which flowers they prefer, and each choice offers clues about the most promising plants.<\/p>\n<p>But to truly understand what&#8217;s happening, it&#8217;s necessary to go beyond the flight. That\u2019s why the team combines this data with genetic and laboratory analyses to uncover the traits shared by the plants most favored by pollinators.<\/p>\n<p>All of this takes place in a<strong> phenotyping platform<\/strong> designed and installed <strong>by Novagric:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These are <strong>multitunnel greenhouses divided into six completely independent sectors<\/strong>, equipped with <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/novagric.com\/en\/greenhouse-climate-technologies\/climate-controller-climatec\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Climatec<\/a><\/span> systems that allow different environmental conditions to be recreated in a controlled way.<\/p>\n<p>Each sector has its own <strong>fertigation system and sensors<\/strong> that monitor variables in real time, enabling the observation of how plants behave under different climate scenarios.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Science, technology and nature are working together<\/strong> to unveil new ways of understanding &#8211;
