This system increases productivity and improves control over growing conditions, while reducing water use. However, the resulting drainage water must be properly managed to prevent the accumulation and release of nutrients into the environment.<\/p>\n<h2>Objectives of LIFE BIOWET<\/h2>\n<p>The main objective of <strong>LIFE BIOWET<\/strong> is to demonstrate the technical and environmental feasibility of a system capable of safely treating and reusing drainage water from hydroponic greenhouses. The proposed solution combines two treatment stages:<\/p>\n<h3>Wood Chip Bioreactors<\/h3>\n<p>In the first stage, the wastewater passes through bioreactors where the activity of denitrifying microorganisms helps reduce the nitrate load.<\/p>\n<h3>Artificial subsurface-flow wetlands<\/h3>\n<p>The water then flows through artificial wetlands, where the combination of plants, substrate, and microbial communities completes the purification process.<\/p>\n<p>This second phase helps remove other potential contaminants, such as phosphorus, excess organic matter that may be generated by bioreactors, and pathogenic organisms, thereby improving the final water quality and facilitating its safe reuse.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-image-element\" style=\"--awb-caption-title-font-family:var(--h2_typography-font-family);--awb-caption-title-font-weight:var(--h2_typography-font-weight);--awb-caption-title-font-style:var(--h2_typography-font-style);--awb-caption-title-size:var(--h2_typography-font-size);--awb-caption-title-transform:var(--h2_typography-text-transform);--awb-caption-title-line-height:var(--h2_typography-line-height);--awb-caption-title-letter-spacing:var(--h2_typography-letter-spacing);\"><span class=\" fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-2 hover-type-none\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1536\" height=\"1024\" title=\"LIFE-BIOWET-4\" src=\"https:\/\/novagric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/LIFE-BIOWET-4.jpg\" alt class=\"img-responsive wp-image-22624\" srcset=\"https:\/\/novagric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/LIFE-BIOWET-4-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/novagric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/LIFE-BIOWET-4-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/novagric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/LIFE-BIOWET-4-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/novagric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/LIFE-BIOWET-4-800x533.jpg 800w, https:\/\/novagric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/LIFE-BIOWET-4-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/novagric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/LIFE-BIOWET-4.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 1536px\" \/><\/span><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-3\"><h2>NOVAGRIC&#8217;s Role in LIFE BIOWET<\/h2>\n<p>Within the consortium, <strong>NOVAGRIC will be responsible for transforming the scientific design into an operational infrastructure that can be applied under real-world agricultural production conditions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The company will design and build the two pilot systems to be installed in greenhouses in the Region of Murcia, specifically in <strong>San Javier and Mazarr\u00f3n.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Their work includes sizing the hydraulic system, integrating the bioreactors and wetlands, designing the sensor network for real-time water quality monitoring, and installing valves that will allow for switching between reusing treated water and safely discharging it when conditions require it.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been working for years on treating wastewater from hydroponic crops, and with BIOWET we\u2019re taking it a step further: a c<strong>omplete, autonomous, and remotely monitored system<\/strong>\u2014a nature-based solution ready to be replicated on other farms,\u201d explains <strong>Juan Pardo, R&amp;D director at NOVAGRIC.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>For his part, Fulgencio Pujante, NOVAGRIC\u2019s technical manager for fertigation, highlights the importance of the system\u2019s ability to adapt to the day-to-day management of a farm:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Drainage water from a hydroponic greenhouse can reach very high salinity levels<\/strong>, and BIOWET is also a water management tool for use right at the greenhouse. It allows you to <strong>decide at any given moment whether to reuse that water for irrigation<\/strong>. This makes it applicable to real-world operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>With more than 45 years of experience in fertigation, water treatment, and technology applied to agriculture, NOVAGRIC brings to the project technical expertise already developed in other European water-focused initiatives, such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/novagric.com\/en\/life-aquemfree-water-decontamination-with-photocatalysis\/\">LIFE AQUEMFREE<\/a> <\/strong>and <a href=\"https:\/\/novagric.com\/en\/life-agrems03il-technology-for-agricultural-soil-disinfection\/\"><strong>LIFE AGREMSOIL<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-image-element\" style=\"--awb-caption-title-font-family:var(--h2_typography-font-family);--awb-caption-title-font-weight:var(--h2_typography-font-weight);--awb-caption-title-font-style:var(--h2_typography-font-style);--awb-caption-title-size:var(--h2_typography-font-size);--awb-caption-title-transform:var(--h2_typography-text-transform);--awb-caption-title-line-height:var(--h2_typography-line-height);--awb-caption-title-letter-spacing:var(--h2_typography-letter-spacing);\"><span class=\" fusion-imageframe imageframe-none imageframe-3 hover-type-none\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1168\" title=\"LIFE-BIOWET-2\" src=\"https:\/\/novagric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/LIFE-BIOWET-2.jpg\" alt class=\"img-responsive wp-image-22618\" srcset=\"https:\/\/novagric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/LIFE-BIOWET-2-200x122.jpg 200w, https:\/\/novagric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/LIFE-BIOWET-2-400x243.jpg 400w, https:\/\/novagric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/LIFE-BIOWET-2-600x365.jpg 600w, https:\/\/novagric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/LIFE-BIOWET-2-800x487.jpg 800w, https:\/\/novagric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/LIFE-BIOWET-2-1200x730.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/novagric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/LIFE-BIOWET-2.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/span><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-4\"><h2>Two pilot projects in San Javier and Mazarr\u00f3n to validate the system in the field<\/h2>\n<p>During the project, two complete pilot systems will be built, operated, and evaluated in greenhouses in the Region of Murcia.<\/p>\n<p>One of them will be located at the <strong>El Mirador Agricultural Demonstration and Technology Transfer Center<\/strong> in San Javier, with a treatment capacity of <strong>1 m\u00b3\/day.<\/strong> The second will be installed at <strong>Grupo Paloma<\/strong> in Mazarr\u00f3n, with a capacity of <strong>10 m\u00b3\/day.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These two systems will allow up to <strong>93% of the drainage water to be recycled,<\/strong> reduce the combined fresh water <strong>demand of both farms by 23%<\/strong>, and eliminate more than <strong>13.5 metric tons of nitrates per year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the European level, water savings could exceed 300,000 m\u00b3 per year, reducing the risk of pollution and eutrophication in water bodies such as aquifers, rivers, lakes, and marine ecosystems.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe system is designed to operate using gravity and solar photovoltaic energy, without the need for a connection to the power grid.
