Irrigation Reservoirs

An irrigation reservoir is a hydraulic infrastructure designed to store large quantities of water for irrigation of agricultural crops.

These irrigation ponds help mitigate the effects of water scarcity in drought-prone regions by providing farmers with year-round access to water, which increases crop productivity and profitability.

The proper construction of these reservoirs is essential to guarantee their functionality and longevity. That is why Novagric can help you with the calculation, design, construction and adaptation to your irrigation system.

Waterproofing of reservoirs

Irrigation reservoirs can be of different sizes and shapes, depending on the amount of water to be stored and the topography of the terrain.

The materials used for the waterproofing of reservoirs are mainly High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC).

Both materials are highly resistant to wear and tear due to external factors, root growth and/or tearing. In both cases it is advisable to install geotextile to serve as a base and support, and to provide high resistance to punctures.

Weatherproofing membranes for waterproofing are suitable for reservoirs, lakes, dams, canals, terraces, etc. In addition, they have excellent UV stability and are manufactured from virgin resins, which guarantees their durability.

In addition to providing water for crop irrigation, reservoirs can also be used for hydroelectric power generation, flood control and much more.

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) reservoirs

  • Common thickness: 1,2 mm

  • Easy and convenient to install

  • High capacity to adapt to uneven terrain.

  • Adaptability to different shapes and complementary elements: drains, trims, permit finishes, etc.

  • Perfect joint by hot air welding.

  • The fixing surfaces must be clean, flat and free of sharp objects.

HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) Reservoirs

  • Common thickness of 1,5 mm.

  • Hot air and extrusion welding.

  • The supporting surface must be stable, clean, flat and free of sharp effects.

  • UV stability offering high weather resistance.

  • Resistance to swelling, putrescibility and ageing.

  • High resistance to perforation on rigid support.

  • Root resistant according to DIN 4062 part I.

  • Withstands asphalts, oils and tars.

  • Good stress “craking resistance”

  • Product recyclable for other applications and environmentally friendly.

How to build a water reservoir

If you need a reservoir for irrigation, Novagric will take care of everything so that you don’t have to worry about anything:

Excavation of the reservoir basin, construction of the containment dike, excavation of the drainage gallery, installation of geotextile protection and High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) or Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) sheeting.
