Seedling greenhouse and nurseries

A seedbed or nursery allows for the planting, germination, maturing and hardening off of all types of plants.

It has an area of land prepared and conditioned to place the seeds so that they can germinate in the best conditions, until the plant is ready for transplanting.

Greenhouses are used for seed cultivation because the climatic requirements are high in the early stages of development, so climate control is essential.

There are three types of seedbeds or nurseries depending on the type of plants they produce:

  • Agricultural nurseries: production of fruit trees.

  • Forest nurseries: production of trees for reforestation or gardening.

  • Ornamental nurseries: production of plants for gardening.

Seedbed or nursery areas

For correct plants growth it is essential to have independent areas and good climate control to adapt it to crop needs during its growth.

A seedbed or nursery divides into:

  • Seeding area: Located in a warehouse. It is where the sowing operation is carried out by automated machinery or by hand.

  • Germination chambers: They are chambers that are conditioned for seeds germination.

  • Production greenhouses: When they germinate, the seedlings pass into greenhouse production to develop until transplanted.

  • Acclimatation area: They prepare seedlings for field conditions. It can be made in the same production greenhouse or in mesh greenhouses adjacent to it.

Which is the recommended greenhouse for producing seeds?

The greenhouse recommended for seedling cultivation is the multi-tunnel type (gothic, asymmetric or chapel), as the conditions of radiation, temperature and relative humidity must be optimally controlled and generate the best possible climatic conditions for seedling development.
