Greenhouses for Growing Roses

The use of Greenhouses in the cultivation of roses makes it possible to produce flowers at times and in places where it would otherwise not be possible.

For this purpose, large greenhouses are required, their light transmission must be adequate, they must also be high and ventilation in the hot months must be good.

Ideal conditions for Rose Cultivation

It is recommended that heating be used during the winter, together with the installation of thermal blankets to conserve heat during the night.

In nursery

  • Temperature > above 20-24ºC.

  • Relative humidity > around 98-100%.

In production

  • Temperature > 17-25ºC.

  • Minimum vegetative temperature > 15ºC, maximum 32ºC.

  • Relative humidity > around 70-75%.

  • It needs high light levels > the higher the light level the higher the production. In the summer months, when high light intensities and long day length prevail, flower production is higher than during the winter months. They are often irradiated for 16 h with artificial lighting in northern latitude countries to improve winter production in quality and quantity.

Main climate-related problems

  • High RH: Fungi are favoured

  • At low light levels: This leads to blind canes and fewer basal shoots, which results in less flower production. In addition, the flowers under these conditions are less brightly coloured and vegetation of the plant is difficult. It contributes to the development of fungi.

  • High temperatures: temperatures above 40°C are lethal, above 30°C they produce small flowers with few petals and a pale colour.

  • Low temperatures: they produce more petals, causing a physiopathology called bull’s head, which is a malformation of the flower. They produce more anthocyanin, i.e. a more reddish colour. Temperatures below -18ºC are lethal and vegetative arrest occurs at -1ºC. Flower buds are formed from 14ºC onwards.
