GREENDOMO. New urban greenhouse model

GreenDomo is an innovative urban agriculture solution for sustainable food production of the future.

The general objective of GREENDOMO is the development of an intensive production system for urban cultivation without artificial lighting, which allows the integration of new multilevel techniques to achieve high productivity in polyculture systems, in order to provide the consumer with a local product, fresh and free of pesticide residues. Intensive greenhouse agriculture in the Almeria area of southeastern Spain has been a success in terms of production and has generated new techniques for growing fruits and vegetables. Now, the goal is to bring this technology to cities, with a more aesthetic, productive and environmentally friendly greenhouse.

Greendomo Greenhouse Features

The Greendomo Greenhouse is shaped like a dome or globe, with a structure composed of triangles. This allows a minimum consumption of energy and materials, ensuring that solar radiation reaches the plants homogeneously, without structural obstacles. Its vertical planting system in rotating columns allows crops to be grown all year round with 70% less water. In addition, its airtight structure protects crops from adverse weather conditions and pests, which improves the yield and quality of agriculture.

Advantages of Greendomo

Installing Greendomo in cities, in parks, squares and even attics, would allow food to be produced nearby, which reduces transportation costs and meets carbon footprint requirements. Greenhouse maintenance requires only two workers, which makes it cost-effective compared to traditional intensive farming systems. In addition, its development will contribute in a sustainable way to the environment by minimizing the water footprint of crops, the carbon footprint and the consumption of phytosanitary products for pest control. GREENDOMO will also bring agriculture closer to the city, encouraging the professionalization of city agriculture and promoting quality employment in this sector. Technically, the aim is to achieve longer crop cycles and higher yields, using multilevel cultivation techniques, to achieve up to 22 times more production than traditional greenhouse crops, without having to incorporate artificial lighting.

The future of urban agriculture

Greendomo’s idea is to revolutionize urban agriculture and contribute to meeting the growing global demand for food. This requires the support of governments and pioneering foundations. Its implementation in cities would transform the daily lives of people around the world. In addition, Greendomo represents an opportunity to create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly food production system. More information: Euronews
