Greenhouses for organic Pitaya
Jose Manuel, a farmer decided to transform his greenhouse of ornamental plants for the organic cultivation of this exotic fruit, becoming a pioneer in successfully introducing this crop in the Spanish Levant.
Many producers have been interested in diversifying their production with high-value crops or tropical and exotic fruit. The introduction of pitaya in the greenhouse is presented as a great investment alternative because it can increase the profitability of their farms due to its high yield:
- Fruit with low maintenance cost
- Plant´s life: from 25 to 30 years
- High productivity: between 50 and 60 kilos in season
- High prices on the market: around 20€ per kilo.
This greenhouse project has been carried out in the southern area of the Valencian Community, thanks to the Mediterranean climate and the low crop water demand it is possible to plant Dragon Fruit in any season.
There are many varieties and subvarieties of pitaya, José Manuel usually has the most common ones in his greenhouses; Hybridum, which has red flesh, and Undatus, which has white flesh. He also has other varieties such as Golden Yellow, with yellow skin and white pulp, or Marmel with red pulp.
