Tomato Greenhouses

Tomato cultivation has demanding climatic requirements, so the use of greenhouses in tomato production is of vital importance (especially in temperate or cold climates).

In the past, vine or scrape and grass greenhouses were used, but new cultivation techniques (trellising at high altitudes and hydroponic systems) require the construction of multi-tunnel greenhouses for their production.

Best climate for growing tomato

The necessary conditions for tomato cultivation are:

  • Daytime temperature > 20-30ºC

  • Night temperature > 15-17ºC.

  • Vegetative temperature > 12ºC-35ºC.

  • Optimum temperature for fertilisation >between 12ºC y 25ºC, from these values is defective or zero.

  • Relative humidity > Around the 60-80%.

What problems can arise if the climate is not controlled?

  • High relative humidity: Favours the development of aerial diseases, cracking of the fruit and hinders fertilisation, due to the fact that the pollen is compacted, aborting part of the flowers.

  • Low level of light: It has a negative effect on the processes of flowering, fertilisation and vegetative development of the plant. Contributes to the development of fungi.

  • High temperatures: Temperatures above 45°C are lethal, above 35°C they affect fruiting, due to poor ovule development and the development of the plant in general and the root system in particular.

  • Low temperatures: They produce a “Catface” physiopathy or pistillate woody scar. Tomatoes show large scars and holes in the pistillate end of the fruit, as well as lack of shape. Sometimes, the fruit is kidney-shaped with long scars.
