What are hydroponics ?

Hydroponics is an irrigation system in which the roots of the crops receive a balanced nutrient solution dissolved in water with all the chemical elements necessary for the development of the plants.

The plants can grow directly on the mineral solution, or in a substrate or inert medium.

The use of hydroponic systems is used in smart greenhouses for profitable crops that require a high level of control over the production process, such as greenhouse crops of cucurbits, tomatoes, peppers and strawberries.

Advantages of Hydroponic Greenhouse Cultivation

  • Provides the root system with a constant moisture level.
  • Reduces the risks arising from excessive irrigation, such as root asphyxia.
  • Solves the problems caused by soil depletion.
  • Reduces costs of cultivation operations.
  • Facilitates labour.
  • Easy automation and programming of the system in variable levels.
  • Optimises the use of water and fertilisers.
  • Significantly reduces disease problems caused by soil-borne pathogens.
  • Increases yields and improves production quality.
  • Maintain optimal conditions for maximum photosynthetic yield.

  • Maximize energy efficiency

  • Better use of space.

  • Shorter crop cycles. Faster plant development.

Hydroponic Irrigation Systems

Liquid hydroponic system

These systems do not have substrates for the development of the crops, so it is produced directly on the water by means of different systems carried by the plants such as:

  • Deep-flow hydroponics: NGS.

  • Floating systems: Floating Trays.

  • Water film systems: NFT.

Hydroponic system on substrate

In these systems, crops are grown using inert substrates irrigated by drip irrigation, subirrigation or exudation systems. The most common substrates are perlite, rockwool, coconut fibre and peat.

  • Bed or furrow cultivation.

  • Sack cultivation.

  • Cultivation in individual containers or gutters.

  • Surface cultivation (sanding).

Aeroponic system

It consists of a cultivation system where the root remains in the open air, in a container that keeps it in the dark, where the nutrient solution is applied in the form of a spray or mist.

Drainage in hydroponics

Hydroponic systems need a drainage percentage to be established, especially in substrate hydroponic systems, in order not to salinize the root environment when saline water is used in hydroponics.

Depending on the use of the drainage system, they could be closed (where nutrient solution is recirculated) or missing solution systems.

Greenhouse Hydroponic Systems

  • Greenhouse.
  • Automated watering head and plant support system.
  • Pumping equipment.
  • Containers for concentrated nutrient solutions.
  • Pipelines for fertigation application.
  • Irrigation programmer.
  • Receiver of drainage or effluent.

Materials used in hydroponics

  • Cultivation tables.
  • Growing bags.
  • Particular cultivation systems (NGS, NFT).
  • The gutters that support the cultivation system.
  • Drainage trays.
