Subsurface drip irrigation systems

Subsurface Drip Irrigation (USI) is a technique of localised delivery of water and nutrients to the soil.

It directly irrigates the root system of the plants, providing great savings in water resources, nutrients, costs and reduces environmental impact. The application of the water dose is done through the emitters and its installation conditions the disposition and location of the roots and the development pattern of the plants.

Is subsurface irrigation efficient?

Subsurface drip irrigation (SSDI) is a technique for delivering localised water and nutrients to the soil. It directly irrigates the root system of plants, saving water and nutrients. It also reduces costs and environmental impact.

The water is poured through the sprinklers. And its installation determines the arrangement and location of the roots and the way the plants develop.

How to determine how much water you should use?

This depends on the water holding capacity of the soil, the efficiency of the system and the root depth of your crops. Indeed, to get the most out of subsurface drip irrigation, you need very specific design, installation, operation and maintenance. That’s why at Novagric we adapt the entire drip irrigation system to your needs and available resources. Thus, we guarantee you greater productivity in your crops.

Underground irrigation installation

  • Pumping system
  • Filtration system
  • Xilema Fertigation System for automated nutrient delivery
  • Elements for monitoring and analysing pressures, flow and water consumption
  • Micro-irrigation pipes
  • Emitters

Advantages of Subsurface Drip Irrigation

  • Stability in bulb water content
  • Increased root porosity
  • Good ratio between water content and soil atmosphere
  • Saving water and fertiliser through precise control
  • No leakage as the risk of damage is minimised.
  • Better maintenance
  • Increased irrigated area as it does not require specific access roads.
  • The geometry, size and topography of the plot does not affect the uniformity of water application.
  • It allows the use of wastewater without contact between the supply, which prevents infections and bad odours.
  • It reduces the risk of pests and diseases as there is no water on the soil surface.
  • Damage caused by rodents, birds and boring insects is prevented.
  • Absence of vandalism
  • Displacement of emitting pipes by cultivation work is avoided by altering the location of the emission points
  • Reduced presence and development of weeds
  • The cultivation work of personnel and equipment is facilitated as the system is not exposed to damage.
  • Energy costs are reduced due to low operating pressure and high application efficiency.
  • Longer useful life of the pipe as it is not exposed to the degrading action of solar radiation.
  • Reduction of operational costs.

On which crops can I install Subsurface Irrigation Systems?

Underground drip irrigation systems (RGS) are suitable for all types of crops (almond trees, vines, olive trees, pistachio trees, peaches, maize, barley, alfalfa, etc.). Furthermore, it is also compatible with organic farming, as it improves plant health and avoids the use of certain phytosanitary treatments.

Need help with your underground Irrigation system?

Underground drip irrigation systems require very specific design, installation, operation and maintenance criteria to make the most of all the advantages of these systems. Therefore, at Novagric we adapt the entire irrigation system to your needs and available resources.
