Walnut tree crops have a high growth capacity and are highly appreciated for their tree fruit (the nut) and their wood.
Spain produces 30% of the walnuts consumed, so it is a profitable production.
Although nut production begins at 6 years from planting, the farm is profitable from the eighth year. And once it begins to produce, the walnut tree useful life is around 30 years, producing between 30 and 160 nuts kg twice a year.
Walnuts plantation and growth
The tree can reach up to 27 meters in height, has a slightly greyish trunk and branches that form a voluminous and rounded crown. In addition, its roots reach 50 cm deep and 3 m long.
Trees distribution and planting scheme depends on your objectives (obtaining wood, fruits, intensive production, etc.)
Walnut trees have male and female flowering on the same tree, but at different stages. Thus, it is recommended to have two varieties (the later male) to pollinate and avoid frost problems.
How to grow walnut trees from seed?
Despite its high profitability, starting to grow walnut requires a high initial investment: planting, irrigation installation and additional costs (harvesting machinery specific to walnut).
It is a tree with a high demand for water and nutrients. So, designing a good irrigation and fertilization strategy (providing the right water and nutrients dose) contributes to a rapid amortization and good nuts development.
