Irrigation system design

Designing the irrigation network requires specialised agronomic knowledge, extensive experience in professional engineering solutions and good execution of the work in order to maximise efficiency.

At Novagric we have been doing this since 1978 and can provide you with a comprehensive irrigation solution for all types of crops.

The first step in carrying out successful agricultural irrigation projects is to carry out a complete assessment of the feasibility of your project with all the factors involved in the process, in order to design a strategy that is customised to your needs.

At this stage we will need to know all the factors involved in the process:

  • Location, soil type, terrain and crop type
  • Availability of water for irrigation purposes
  • Climatic conditions of the area: average values of temperature, relative humidity, frost, rainfall, solar radiation and winds.
  • Electricity supply, communications and other

Based on the factors involved in the process and the customer’s specifications, the irrigation needs are calculated. In this way, we determine the water required by the crops at the time of greatest need.

  • Requirements per plant depending on climate: for the calculation of the number of emitters required depending on the flow rate, and their arrangement based on the planting frame and soil type.
  • Total needs of the farm, depending on the size of the farm and the number of irrigation sectors.

The factors taken into account for the design of the irrigation system are as follows:

  • The slope of the land.
  • Pressure losses due to friction between the water and the pipe wall.
  • The location of water resources. Wells, reservoirs, etc.
  • The form of irrigation management. Manual or automated.
  • Possible obstacles that the property may have, such as gas or water pipes, power lines, etc.

Once all the parameters that affect the design of the project have been determined, the drawings or simulations are drawn up, representing the spatial configuration of the entire hydraulic design, and the final solution of the project is obtained with all the components, materials, auxiliary systems and the automatisms it consists of.

We have our own facilities for the manufacture of irrigation systems, fertigation, water and automation and control technologies.

Irrigation installation

We have the largest installation and service team in Spain.

We install, coordinate and execute irrigation projects with water storage and reuse systems, meeting deadlines and design approved by you.

The first phase in the construction of an irrigation project is the levelling of the surface. It starts with the clearing and levelling of the land and the relevant earthworks are carried out in accordance with the criteria for water drainage and slopes to improve working conditions on the farm.

Once the pre-installation phase has been completed, the necessary trenches and excavations are made for the installation of all the components of the agricultural irrigation system in order to start cultivating:

Irrigation network: This is the system of pipes that allows the irrigation water (and fertiliser in the case of fertigation) to be transported from the head to the irrigation emitters placed next to the plants.
Irrigation emitters: These are responsible for supplying water to the plants (drippers).
Irrigation head: Pumping equipment, filtering equipment and fertiliser equipment, it could be said to be the brain of an irrigation system.
Control elements: These are all the devices that help us to control the entire irrigation process, from meters to solenoid valves and others.
Reservoir: Its function is to reserve water and guarantee its availability for irrigation supply, as well as to store it when irrigation is carried out in shifts.

Finally, various tests and checks are carried out to ensure that all the control and automation systems are working correctly in the different irrigation sectors.
