Almond Tree Irrigation with Photovoltaic Energy
Spain, with an average of 2,500 hours of sunshine per year, is one of the countries with the highest daylight hours. A privilege that more and more farmers take advantage of by installing photovoltaic panels that use solar energy to irrigate their crops.
Relying on this type of solutions means great economic savings and has many advantages, so it is not surprising that every day there are more success cases that serve as a reference for professionals in the agricultural sector.
Javier, a young farmer from Tomelloso, has inherited his grandfather’s farm where they used to cultivate vineyard and now, he has decided to bet on almond tree production with clean energy.
The farm consists of a solar pumped irrigation installation with photovoltaic energy developed by the company Novagric, replacing the old diesel engine irrigation.
“Now that we start from scratch, we have bet on something much cleaner” says Javier, thus creating a clean energy that takes advantage of sunlight and respects the environment.
What advantages does this solar panels irrigation system offer?
Irrigation systems powered by generators not only involve higher diesel costs, but they also require a lot of maintenance. So, having this alternative not only reduces fossil fuels costs, but also system maintenance.
For this type of facilities an initial inversion is needed, but as Javier says: “With solar panels the expense you do it the first year and then it is amortised”. Since they are amortised in a time of between five and six years, ensuring a solar panel operation of 25 years minimum, so it means almost 20 years free.
Another advantage of having solar irrigation system is its great autonomy. The sunshine hours that can be used depend on the season of the year, being able to reach eleven hours of sunshine per day.
