NOVAGRIC Projects
Pistachio cultivation with technology in Spain
A vegetable farmer changes his business model to pistachio and achieves profitable production in 6 years.
Aware of the potential of Castilla-La Macha for woody crops, in 2017 an entrepreneur from Tomelloso together with a group of friends, decided to transform their agricultural activity model to bet on the technified cultivation of pistachio, opening new opportunities for agriculture in the area.
With an area of 280 hectares, the plantation of pistachios such as Kerman, Sirora, Larnaka or Lost Hill, have become the main activity of the farm, driven by the optimal soil and climate conditions for this crop in the region.
The investment in state-of-the-art agricultural technology, with the collaboration of Novagric, has been key in this transformation process, which has made it possible to carry out an intensive irrigation project with efficient water management in an area with a water deficit.
Our goal was to turn this plantation into an industry. To do so, we looked for commercial partners who could provide us with the necessary technology. We decided on Novagric because of its ability to offer integral solutions in programming and irrigation systems,” says Carlos, an agricultural entrepreneur.
The implementation of an automated irrigation system, controlled by programmers and soil moisture sensors, has ensured precise water management, adjusted to the nutritional needs of the crop and ensuring healthy tree growth.
The success of this initiative is reflected in the yields obtained: The pistachio production process has been significantly accelerated, cutting production from ten to six years, while maintaining high quality standards.
Thus, the pistachio tree, a slow-growing tree, has found a new environment conducive to its development. This case demonstrates the potential of agricultural technology in Spanish agriculture, opening new perspectives and opportunities for farmers in alternative crop production.
